Marion Cotillard & Joaquin hit the Low Life Set

Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix film some scenes for their new movie, Low Life on Friday (January 27) in New York City.

The 36-year-old French actress plays Sonya Cybulski, a woman trying to immigrate from Poland, in the romantic drama directed by James Grey.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: “[Sonya's] American dream turns into a nightmare. While sailing to Ellis Island and a new start, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened … With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York.”

Joaquin and James previously worked together in 2007′s We Own the Night.

Paul Thomas Anderson's Next Film Being Shot On IMAX Stock

When it comes to the debate of IMAX vs. 3D, we here at Cinema Blend are staunchly in favor of the former. Managing to create what appears to be actual depth instead of artificial depth, IMAX is the most immersive format currently available for filmmakers. Some of the best action sequences from last year came courtesy of Brad Bird using 65mm print for scenes in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and we can't wait to see what other filmmakers do with it. Take, for example, Paul Thomas Anderson, who is apparently filming parts of his next film in IMAX.

In a conversation with Brad Bird on Twitter, director Andrew Stanton confirmed that Anderson is using 65mm print for his next project, which has gone by the name ofThe Master (though it is currently untitled). Even more interesting, apparently Anderson even lost control of one of the rigs at one point, as Stanton said that they nearly lost a camera while "shooting in the Bay." Supposedly a commentary on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, Anderson's film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a World War II veteran named Lancaster Dodd who returns to the states and founds his own religion, taking a drifter, named Freddie Sutton (played by Joaquin Phoenix), under his wing. But as the religion grows, Freddie begins to question Dodd's actual intent. The movie also stars Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Rami Malek, Kevin J. O'Connor, and Jesse Plemons.

What's really fascinating about this story is that the logistics don't really seem to add up. In addition to being incredibly expensive (The Master barely got financed as it was), IMAX is notorious for being noisy and hard to maneuver. What this means for The Master is a mystery at this point, but we can't wait to see the results.

"Low Life" Set To Begin Filming

This week the New York City-based casting agency Grant Wilfley posted a casting call looking for various types to appear in scenes for The Untitled James Gray Project in the New York City area on February 1, 16 & 17, proof the movie will begin filming in NYC within the next few weeks.

The film, also referred to as Low Life, is about “an innocent immigrant woman (played by Marion Cotillard) is tricked into a life of burlesque and vaudeville until a dazzling magician tries to save her and reunite her with her sister who is being held in the confines of Ellis Island” and has already received a lot of buzz, partially because it is one of Joaquin Phoenix’s first films in a few years.

Recently, Collider asked Jeremy Renner, who also appears in the movie, why he took a part in the film. He said, “What a great opportunity. It’s an amazing story. It’s James Gray, Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. That’s some of the best talent out there. It’s not an action movie, which at this point, from where I’m sitting, is a nice thing. I can actually take a break on my body and just focus on work and character. That’s refreshing. And, to work with that caliber of talent is really exciting. It’s a small role. It’s something I can shoot in a very short amount of time. There’s a pimp, a whore and a magician, and I get to play the magician, in a really cool, early 1900′s immigration movie about Ellis Island.”

His response also explains how he will shoot the movie in the middle of filming The Bourne Legacy.

One of the most anticipated movies of 2012 (or maybe 2013) is Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, his first sinceThere Will Be Blood. A 1950s period drama, the movie follows a drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) drawn into the fold of a charismatic leader (the Master of the title, a.k.a. Philip Seymour Hoffman) espousing a newly created pseudo-religious belief system ("the Cause") to an increasingly devoted following. The drifter finds himself equally drawn to the Master's daughter (Amy Adams). All of these ingredients would be enough to guarantee attention, but why not add some Scientology into the mix, just for fun?

Several observers have noticed parallels between the story of the Master and his Cause, and the founding of Scientology by L. Ron Hubbard. There are few more potentially dangerous lightning rods in Hollywood productions than making the Church of Scientology angry, as who wants to wake up with John Travolta leaning over your bed, brandishng an E-meter and complaining about your dirty aura. Nevertheless, Anderson and his people deny there is any Scientological allegory in play, so it remains to be seen if The Master will stir up audience acclaim or a nest of angry Thetans, or both.

Meanwhile, photographer Jack Erling was lucky enogh to snap a few photos of the action backstage during filming of The Master, catching extras in costume between takes. No celebs, but you can get a first taste of that vintage Anderson flavor.

The Master score and synopsis

Jonny Greenwood‘s score for There Will Be Blood was one of the many reasons the film was amazing. It pulled just enough from period-era music so as not be jarring, but it was offbeat enough to be completely unnerving. Now, Cigarettes and Red Vines is reporting that Greenwood is re-teaming with director Paul Thomas Anderson to score The Master (still an unofficial title). Oliver Weindling, founder of British record label Babel, tweeted said “Zed-U recorded part of soundtrack for Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead last week. Film (by Paul Thomas Anderson) to appear in 2013.” Zed-U are a British jazz trio and you can listen to some of their music after the jump.
For those who aren’t familiar with The Master, the story centers on a World War II veteran (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who returns home and creates his own religion after witnessing the horrors of war. At one point, The Master reportedly had a very strong parallel to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but it’s unknown how much of the script has changed since then. (LOS ANGELES) -- Following reports of a movie featuring the late actor River Phoenix being finalized, his family -- including his brother Joaquin Phoenix -- has denied any involvement, reports Deadline Hollywood. River died of a drug-related heart attack at the age of 23 in front of the Viper Room in West Hollywood in 1993 at the time he was shooting the film Dark Blood. Director George Sluizer said this week he was re-editing the footage for a release next year and would complete the story using a voice-over from Joaquin. A spokesperson for the actor's family said, “Despite George Sluizer’s claim that he had been communicating with River Phoenix’s family in regard to releasing River’s last film, Joaquin Phoenix and his family have not been in communication with the director nor will they participate in any way.”

"Back in March Deadline broke news about a new, untitled project doing the rounds from director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman. At the time all that was known about the latest project from the duo behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation was that it was a political satire and that Megan Ellison's Annapurna Productions was coming on to back the project. Deadline described the story as "a satire about how world leaders gather to figure out all the seismic events that will take place in the worlds, from oil prices to wars that will be waged."

Things have been quiet since but Twitch has learned that Warner Brothers have now also come on board. Plot details remain sketchy but Joaquin Phoenix is attached to star and Vincent Landay to produce with a March 2012 start date eyed for production.

"Crews filmed a scene for an upcoming movie aboard the USS Hornet Monday. Joaquin Phoenix was on deck.
The cameras were rolling at the USS Hornet on Monday.
The restored World War II aircraft carrier was a backdrop for a movie being filmed about post-war life. Film industry websites suggest that the film is based on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, who served in the Navy in World War II and later founded the Church of Scientology.
The spokesperson for the USS Hornet, Madeline McEntyre, said Joaquin Phoenix was on the set and crews were filming scenes of someone jumping off the front of the ship.
McEntyre said she could not give more details.
According to this article by the San Jose Mercury News, the production company has been tight-lipped about disclosing the filming locations. But two weeks ago, a Joaquin Phoenix fan website posted a reader's report of filming in Crockett.
The movie is scheduled to open late next year.
The USS Hornet is moored at Alameda Point and now serves as a museum."

Blogreader Steve Gaudet was so kind to give me permission to post his photo he made of the filming set of The Master in Crockett.

Steve wrote: Just thought you'd like to ( in case you didn't already), that I saw Joaquin Phoenix in Crockett, Calif last Thursday ( Live there). They were filming a movie in the house a couple doors away from mine, but were keeping the whole thing hush hush. At 8am on Thursday morning as I was sitting on my front porch steps, he walked right by me on his way to a waiting car and said "hows it going?". Not recognizing him at first, I casually nodded back to him. He was wearing some those blue pants the people in the Navy wear and smoking a cigarette. Later that day I saw him again, this time in a different outfit ( 1940's) as they were filming him in a scene on the porch of the house they were filming. Thats when I finally figured out who it was. Seemore Philip Hoffman was also doing scenes there. I think the directors name is Anderson or something like that.

Anyway, on Friday they were kind enough to let a few of the locals watch them film the exterior shots. It was pretty cool. They worked until late Friday night and then took off to Mare Island in Vallejo ( just a few miles from the town of Crockett) where they're going to film the shipyard scenes.

Took a bunch of photos with my cell phone, but unfortunately I didn't have a zoom. If you look really carefully you can see Joaquin on the porch of the house.

Scenes from a film starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix that already has stirred controversy in Hollywood are being shot this month in Vallejo.

While film industry websites say the as-yet untitled Paul Thomas Anderson feature film is loosely based on the late Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, a production company official denied that to a reporter.

The spokeswoman also asked that specific filming locations for the movie not be published.

A film industry website describes the project as "a 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as 'the Master' whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man."

In denying any connection to Hubbard, Western Film Co., LLC's Joanne Sellar said, "It's a World War II drama. It's about a drifter after World War II."

Sellar said work on the closed set will continue through June before the company returns to Los Angeles. The film is expected to open in late 2012, she said...

It's called Low Life, and it will star Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, with Jeremy Renner in discussions to play the third lead. The project is being packaged by CAA. Several financiers are in the mix, but I hear that Wild Bunch will likely get it. Discussions are also taking place with domestic distributors, and deal is expected to be sealed shortly. The Hurt Locker's Greg Shapiro is producing.
I'm told that Cotillard will play a woman attempting to immigrate from Poland. Her American dream turns into a nightmare. While sailing to Ellis Island and a new start, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened. Though she does, she walks away with immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals. With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York. Renner is close to signing on to play the sleazebag's cousin, a magician who sweeps the young woman off her feet and is her best chance to escape the nightmarish life she has fallen into. This will be Gray's fourth film with Phoenix, who previously starred in The Yards, We Own The Night and most recently Two Lovers.
Shooting is to begin next year. All of the actors are busy. Cotillard is starring in The Dark Knight Rises, Renner will star in the Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy, and Phoenix has returned to work starring in Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled drama.

The fundraiser, which also features performances by Zac Hanson and Rain Phoenix, benefits The New Growth Partnership, providing meals and other services for students there.

The evening is hosted by Donna Karan, Joaquin Phoenix and Salman Rushdie.

The Weinstein Company has won a quiet but fevered bidding battle for worldwide distribution rights to the untitled next film by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film begins production June 13, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix so far set to star. Megan Ellison is financing. It is Anderson's first trip behind the camera since There Will Be Blood.
Hoffman and Phoenix are locked. As for the actresses, I'm told that Anderson is eyeing such women as Madisen Beaty (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) for a role, with Amy Adams, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's Lena Endre and Laura Dern also mentioned as actresses Anderson is interested in. The auction was held at CAA headquarters late last week, with Fox Searchlight also squarely in the mix.
This is the project that Anderson has worked on for a long time, once under the title The Master. He has greatly overhauled the script and now, Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls. The film is fully financed by Ellison's Annapurna banner. At a time when the implosion of the indie film marketplace made pricey auteur films so hard to finance, Ellison has emerged as something of a godsend to the small group of auteurs she is working with. She's enabled Anderson to make the movie at or near the $35 million budget the film was going to cost back when Universal stepped away.
The deal gives TWC a big title to bring to the Cannes Film Festival this week. More to come ...

Hoffman will play Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic intellectual known as The Master, while Phoenix would play Freddie Sutton, an alcholic drifter who becomes his right-hand man only to begin questioning his manipulative mentor. Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures is looking to co-finance the period pic, which Universal was previously considering funding before having second thoughts about its mid-range budget. Anderson and his longtime producing partner JoAnne Sellar will produce through the former's Ghoulardi Film Co., along with Ellison. Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures has sent their Akira script, a live action adaptation of anime artist Katsuhiro Ôtomo's 6-volume graphic novel, to a short list of actors.

Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy are all being considered for the role of Tetsuo. The role of Kaneda is being shopped to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix.

Steve Kloves has signed onto do a rewrite of the screenplay for director Albert Hughes. The story takes place in a rebuilt New Manhattan, where the leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. The goal is to make two films, each covering three books in the series.

Production is set to start in August.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Joaquin Phoenix is no longer in talks to play Abraham Lincoln's mentor in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter", movie insiders said on Thursday.

Instead, 20th Century Fox is in final negotiations with English actor Dominic Cooper ("Mamma Mia!") in the big screen adaptation of the period vampire novel by Seth Grahame-Smith.

Cooper will star opposite Benjamin Walker, who landed the coveted role of President Abraham Lincoln last month, as director Timur Bekmambetov moves to cast lesser-known stars, versus big names.

Cooper will play Henry Sturges, who mentors and trains Lincoln in the ways of vampire hunting.

Last month, Cooper made waves at the Sundance Film Festival for his dual roles in the indie film "The Devil's Double", in which he plays both Saddam Hussein and the late Iraqi leader's double.

This summer, Cooper has a supporting role in Marvel Studios and Paramount's "Captain America: The First Avenger."

The cast of "Vampire Hunter" is beginning to round out.

In talks to play the role of Lincoln's best friend is Anthony Mackie, another young actor. His film credits include last year's best picture Oscar winner "The Hurt Locker" as well as "We Are Marshall" and "Eagle Eye".

Although the studio declined comment on possible female leads, two names being mentioned are Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World") and Australian actress Robin McLeavy.

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is Bekmambetov's first movie since the 2008 hit "Wanted", and tells the story of how Lincoln crushes vampires during the U.S. Civil War.

According to Deadline, Joaquin Phoenix is the front-runner to play Henry in the Timur Bekmambetov directed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Deadline was told that it’s Phoenix’s, if he wants it. Phoenix would join Benjamin Walker who is set to play Lincoln in the film adaption of the novel written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Buy Here). Phoenix’s character would teach the 16th President how to kill those nasty vampires with his gifted height, strength, and skill with an ax.(...)

James Franco Says He’ll Direct ‘As I Lay Dying’ This Summer; Joaquin Phoenix, Paul Dano & More Cast

It looks like one of the many, many big projects James Franco has dipped his toes in the water for is coming closer to fruition. Speaking with MTV on the slopes of the Sundance Film Festival, James Franco went ahead and dropped some truth bombs about one major picture he says he will direct this summer.

“This summer I’m going to direct a movie based on William Faulkner‘s novel ‘As I Lay Dying,’” Franco told MTV. And he didn’t stop there. The actor reveals that on New Year’s Day while everyone else was recovering from wicked hangovers, he was busy test-shooting the entire 160-page script for the film (which he admits is probably too long). “I shoot a test of the whole movie before I make a movie. So we just shot a test.” And if that still isn’t enough news for you, Franco went ahead and revealed who will likely appear in the cast, and if it all holds, it’s pretty damn stellar.

Michael Shannon (who he calls his “favorite actor,” who he’s worked with twice already, directing him in “Herbert White” and “The Broken Tower”), Paul Dano, Richard Jenkins and Joaquin Phoenix were all named as part of the potential cast. Joaquin Phoenix is so desperate to quit smoking he gets friends to hit his hand whenever he reaches for a cigarette.

The hunky actor has been trying to give up the unhealthy habit for a long time, with little success. He has reportedly even tried having hypnotherapy sessions to cure him of the affliction, but they didn’t work.

The star recently had lunch at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, and was overheard asking a friend for a favour to help him quit.

“He asked his friend to slap his hand whenever it wondered to his pack on the table,” reports National Enquirer. “The guys continued chatting, with the friend regularly hitting Joaquin on the hand.”

After a three-hour meeting, Joaquin realised he hadn’t smoked a single cigarette. He was quick to tell his friend, and was overheard saying “slap-therapy” was the best method he has found to cut down smoking.

Clint Eastwood Denies Joaquin Phoenix's Involvement In 'Hoover,' Asks 'Didn't He Become A Rapper?'

Would playing Leonardo DiCaprio's on-screen lover in Clint Eastwood's "Hoover" have been enough to resurrectJoaquin Phoenix's still-tarnished film career? Maybe... but unfortunately we'll never know.

During an interview with Reuters, Eastwood emphatically denied Phoenix was in contention for the role of Clyde Tolson in the biopic on J. Edgar Hoover.

"No. I don't know where that came from," Eastwood said. "Didn't he become a rapper?"

Sort of... but not really, as we all discovered when Casey Affleck revealed that "I'm Still Here" was a hoax. But it still is a bit of a disappointment that Phoenix's mutilation of his own career for the sake of Affleck's doc potentially contributed to his not getting what would have been a great role.
There is a silver lining to the interview, though, as Eastwood completely confirmed that DiCaprio was in for the role of Hoover. "It's a great role for him," he said, adding that contracts are in the process of being signed.

Eastwood said that he was the right person to make the film because he was alive while Hoover was in the height of his power, when there were "comic books with him on the cover with machine guns and all that."

"He is a fascinating character, and I think I am the right person to do it, not because I knew him or anything, but I did grow up with him," Eastwood said. "He was a very complex person. The homosexual aspect is just one of many. I would say that's the least of his problems. But he was also very clever, whether rightfully or wrongfully, he was very clever about keeping himself in a certain position in life, so it is an interesting study."

Months ago, while wrestling about with one of Joaquin Phoenix’s pups on the floor of his living room, the film, I’m Still Here, at that time still a work in progress, off-handedly arose in conversation. The Casey Affleck directed picture follows Phoenix’s self-imposed journey through a gauzy, turbulent, hilarious, media-soaked, tunnel of attempted creative diversification from acting to hip-hop, discussed in the following interview herein. I asked Phoenix (at the time of course unknowing his response might introduce a future interview with him and Affleck), something like this: “So, are your beats nasty, Joaquin?” to which he replied something like, “Oh, there are no beats.”

MB: Really, no beats? So it’s orchestral?
JP: You just wait and see.

Well, there are beats. And there aren’t. Move forward in time and a handful of Flaunt’s finest are watching the film on Phoenix’s couch. And it’s wonderful. Sweetly, calculatedly averse to basically all that’s been conjectured about its composition, it’s neither ‘real’ nor ‘hoax’. Here’s why: in the myriad speculation across the Internet on the nature of the film, and in turn, the state of Phoenix himself, there is virtually no middle ground ventured. There’s hate, spoofs, declarations of fatigue with the effort, as well as undying fandom.
What’s unfound out there in the land of critique is any suggestion that this landscape is itself playing an influential role in Phoenix’s journey, that the film could achieve both fiction and meta-fact. In fact, reality and hoax are both thoroughly fucked with by I’m Still Here, and the result, at times raunchy, at times heartbreaking, and entertaining throughout, is a profound portrait of contemporary artistry–complete with filmic character arc, Hollywood proclivities, defecation, tried and tested friendship, and finally, an examination of the expectations we the public thrust onto the shoulders of those who choose, or are chosen by, stardom.
Around a picnic table in Phoenix’s yard, while photographer Michael Muller, plus friend and I’m Still Here contributor Amanda Demme takes photos, myself, Flaunt Editor-in-Chief, Luis Barajas, and the film’s two primary progenitors discuss its odds and ends....

MB: Well, we’re calling this the Trust Issue to begin with.
JP: Casey hates that idea.
CA: Here’s the deal–this [interview] is nothing like what we wanted to do, but we wanted to do something for the magazine.

*It should be noted here that a week previous, we attempted an interview and failed. Here’s some highlights that followed after pressing ‘record’. Insert long, awkward pauses and some anxious pacing as you wish.

CA: The first lesson in being interviewed: do not trust the person with the mic.
JP: I know! I don’t think I’m ready. And it’s one or the other, Casey. I can’t do the in-between, I can’t take it anymore.
CA: It’s literally like we just hatched out of our shell.
JP: It’s like everyone knows you had a baby, and then you’re going to send them detailed video of your vagina after the fact. You just don’t want your friends to see your torn open…
MB: So show your vagina!
CA: I can’t! I can’t!
JP: Show it, Casey!
CA: Not happening!
*So there’s no vagina showings. We determine a reconvene, and thus, back to our evening of willed conversation.

JP: Okay, so let’s go. Casey, why did you wanna do this? [Laughing].
CA: … [says nothing]
LB: He [MB] has good questions.
MB: I don’t have any good questions. What are your guys’ favorite bits?
CA: … [says nothing]
LB: I like the scene with you [JP] and the whores!
JP: Of course you did. What’s most impressive to me is how Casey cut things together, and how we shot things. Like the scene you’re talking about which is supposed to take place with the prostitutes in New York, that was shot on two separate nights, right? One night where they’re kind of going through the computer, and another night where we actually found some people who were willing to do the scene. And the two flow so seamlessly together, and I love that stuff, and I love how Casey made it seem really authentic. A lot of Sue [Patricola’s] expressions, who plays my publicist, her reactions after Letterman were really brilliant.

*This of course refers to one of nighttime television’s more ballsy visitations, where Phoenix, despite being David Letterman desk-side, was simply “not there”.

MB: How about the contribution of Antony [Langdon]?
JP: What about it?
MB: Well, he’s very convincing. He appears to take a lot of emotional beatings, as your General Assistant.
JP: Yeah, that was really impressive. Antony doesn’t have a lot of experience acting, he’s done like a couple things, but I thought that he was really convincing, really heartbreaking at times.
CA: Ant was always game to do whatever was asked of him and to do it over and over again. He gives a great performance.
LB: How and when did you guys decide, alright, we’re going to make this fucking film?

JP: There wasn’t really a moment... It actually happened kind of organically in some ways. I don’t remember there being a decision of like, we’re doing this and then we started. We started doing it, and then we stopped, and then we started doing it, and then we stopped, and then we started again. And throughout the course of the film, I quit, usually every other day, and cursed at Casey and kicked him out of my house, and then he’d try and convince me to do it again. And that was the process.
MB: Do you think you could have done it with anyone else?
JP: No.
LB: And the character was something you came up with before, or the movie shaped the character?
JP: Um, no... I’ve never had any ideas that I have about a character actually make it into a movie. You have your concept of what it is, and then you get there and you start working on it... I’ve looked back at notes of mine from scripts and thought, ‘What the fuck was I thinking when I wrote down that idea?’ So I don’t think that happened. It was a real evolution.
CA: Joaquin had the idea of the character. That’s how it began. It doesn’t matter whether characters you play turn out as you first imagine them–and as Joaquin points out, they rarely do–but it matters that you have an initial idea strong enough to plant it, and it will grow. Joaquin has great ideas and often doesn’t follow up on them because he doubts himself. But he shared his idea and we decided to follow up on it. It was envisioned as something along the lines of what we ended up making, but obviously, like the vision of a character, the vision of a movie changes immensely
MB: What about your monitoring the media more so than any other period? What did you feel about what people were saying about your actions through the process?
CA: It was a murky, chaotic and confusing process. And whenever things became clear… murk, chaos and confusion were intentionally added. But how exactly do you mean?
MB: Well, the commentary of the people on the web watching this unfold? Did it impact your process?
CA: The remarks online you mean? Well… Let’s go back. This is a movie that was planned ahead of time with a lot of thought and discussion, and almost all the characters in the movie knew what was going on. They knew that Joaquin was using his own name but behaving in a way that was nothing like himself. The choices he was making and how he was making them were all thought through and performed–and performed brilliantly, believably and bravely.
MB: So all involved were hip to the plan and playout?
CA: Well, there were some who did think that what was happening was real, even people on the crew. And that did two things, really. It made for some really great reactions and a genuinely tense environment on the set that we needed. It created confusion for some people. Real emotions came into play. Nobody was hurt and everyone was told what was happening, but, honestly, Joaquin was so believable at times and so committed and so relentlessly in character that people got confused. And it was my job to help create, sustain or squash that confusion when the scene we were shooting demanded it. And that created more confusion. But that too was a performance because the film is in part about a man and his relationship to the people making a film about him.
MB: And those not performing or on the crew?
CA: Like the people we would run into on the street or at clubs and so forth? Those people assumed it was a “documentary” and therefore “real”. Beyond that there was the world at large. After Joaquin performed in Vegas, people began to blog and vlog and tweet and make mock videos and even do full entertainment T.V. reports and speculate on entertainment news shows. It was talked about on CNN and FoxNews. At that point the character that Joaquin was playing had to respond to some of it. I mean, he wasn’t living in a bubble. He was interested in the image of himself as it appeared in the world. So, to answer your question, we read the commentary of people on the web a lot for a while. It would determine how we proceeded in the movie. So the movie began to affect the real world, and the world began to respond to the movie, and the movie would incorporate that in certain ways.
MB: Aside from developing the character in months prior to filming, do you feel like this film has been growing between you two as long as you’ve been friends?
JP: Well, one of the earliest things we can talk about… Casey about 15 years ago used to call tabloids and tell them that we were going to be at some bar at some time, and we would basically stage a fight when we got outside the bar. And we did this a few times and no one ever showed up. And then, at about the same time, Casey was going around doing press for a movie, and he wanted to wear a beard for the interviews, and they wouldn’t allow him to. And I saw a picture of me recently with a beard, and I was like, wow, that was the beard that Casey was trying to do, fifteen years ago, and he finally got it in there. Looking back, over the course of knowing each other for twenty years, all the things we’ve talked about, all the things we’ve wanted to do, and we always wanted to do a movie with each other and with our friends. That there was a way to do it–you didn’t need to do it with 150 people and makeup and hair, that we could do that. And we had Larry, whose a production designer, and does special effects and props, and has worked on movies and done all of those things, so we know that he could do those things. And he had great ideas for the house, and building up the studio, and putting the posters up, and so we just felt that we had and knew the friends to make it in a way that we wanted to make it, so it’s actually been a 20 year process to make this movie.
LB: I really felt the character! I was so sad when things started to go badly!
JP: If you do feel anything [emotional] that’s from how Casey put it together, because I’ve looked at the unedited versions and it doesn’t work that way at all. There’s a lot of bad shit, a lot of outtakes and Casey managed to find the bits that weren’t terrible.
CA: Nah, man. For a long time this was a six-hour movie. When Joaquin was on camera, which was most of the time, it was very, very watchable. He taps into something that I imagine in other films was restricted and clipped because of limitations with the process, and here he got to explode with ideas and character nuances. Everything could have stayed. Everything Joaq did.
MB: How about your reception from the hip-hop community? What do you anticipate?
JP: It’s hard to imagine what anyone’s going to think.
CA: There’s really not a lot of music in it for one thing.
LB: Well, thank God.
CA: Joaquin, in reality, is such a talented musician.
JP: [laughing] Don’t say that.
CA: He worked really hard to make it seem like it was a serious effort by someone known to be creative and talented but also be just short of really good so that people would reject it. He had to be rejected.
JP: That’s not true at all. He’s trying to make me sound better. He’s trying to make it sound like I dumbed the music down and shit. But the thing is, I tried desperately hard to make it as good as possible.
LB: Well I thought it was pretty good. And I didn’t understand half of it, because that’s my accent.

MB: Were you surprised by people’s hater-ly response?
JP: It’s hard to be surprised by people’s reactions within the celebrity-fan relationship. People want blood. They will come up and bludgeon you to the brink of death and then clean your face, prop you up, and cheer you on. They can’t be supportive until they have nearly destroyed you.
CA: Joaquin did the concert in Miami. The crowd showed up in fake beards and with cell phone cameras ready to go. They wanted him to make an ass of himself. They wanted to see the Joaquin they saw on Letterman make a fool of himself. When Joaquin jumped off the stage at the heckler, whose a great actor by the way–Eddy Rouse. Really good. He had more in the movie but it had to get cut. So anyway, Joaquin jumped off the stage after one song. His fall from grace was complete. And then they started cheering him on. They chanted his name. The crowd came to life with so much energy. That club was buzzing electric for hours. They were exhilarated, like a high, and then it wore off and they left looking vacant.
JP: No they actually were high. Then they crashed. And left looking vacant.
CA: And I thought it was all about us… Damn.
MB: Do you think that thirst for blood is something unique to humans, Joaquin?
JP: It’s like the WWF or gladiator matches or whatever. It’s a basic, deeply seeded human impulse. Sure, they left it off the Voyager Golden Record [the phonograph placed inside the Voyager spacecraft in 1977, intended to provide information on the human race to extraterrestrial lifeforms], but it does say a lot about human nature. You know NASA wasn’t allowed to put an image of a naked man or woman on the record? They had to change them to silhouettes. Either the aliens will be confused about how we got rid of our waste or they will figure out that we were a repressed, scared, puritanical, small-minded species. They’re gonna show up on Earth in 20,000 years wanting only to know about our body shame. And all that will be here are robots and roaches.
LB: Will the robots have body shame?
JP: No, but lubricant will still be selling.

*A lull. Demme stops taking pictures and looks off contemplatively.

AD: It’s hard for an actor to transition into music. I’ve seen that before. So even if people didn’t know if it was real or not, there’s always this speculative integrity question that goes with it.
JP: We’re talking about robots, Dem.
AD: I know.
MB: The transition Amanda’s talking about doesn’t often come with the total renunciation of one vocation for another, though.
AD: Well it does for some reason, especially in music. It’s easier to become an actor coming from music, than it is from being a musician to being an actor.
JP: Well, it looks like you guys got it from here on out. [laughing] Casey are we talking about the line that you told me in Miami? About the bank account?
CA: Oh, well, we’re talking about everything aren’t we?
JP: Well, not everything.
CA: Well, not Pittsburgh.
JP: No, no, no.
CA: Are we talking about the shoes?
JP: We could.
CA: Um, I don’t think people would understand.
JP: Fuck it. Anyway, I was surprised by some responses but it wasn’t the hating exactly. When Eddie–the heckler in the Miami club–started heckling, the line that Casey gave me to respond with was, “I’ve got a million dollars in my bank account, what do you got?” And I was certain that people were going to start throwing shit and booing me. I imagined they were gonna go like, ‘what a prick’, and instead, people laughed and cheered. They fucking cheered me.
CA: It was meant to be a Michael Richards moment [referring to Richards’ screaming derogatory insults at hecklers during a comedy routine in 2006] but the crowd turned against the heckler instead for some reason. Luckily Joaquin was genius enough that he kept his reaction to it all as one of failure and shame. He could have gotten back up and soaked in the support and it would have killed the whole point of what had been set up. That was incredibly brave what he did.
MB: What about the Hollywood Minute and a Half guy? The vlogging shit talker?
JP: He’s kind of a genius.
MB: Yeah, he really smashed it out of the park, amigo.

*Barajas takes a cell phone call, wherein he calls some people bitches, or something. There’s a comfortable pause.

JP: Okay, what else?
MB: What do you fear most about the release of the film? Do you have any fears?
JP: I think we’ve been through every fear possible throughout the process.
CA: Knock on wood.
JP: Oh, Jesus. I don’t know.
MB: How about Amanda’s scene in the film?
JP: It’s pretty great, right? ‘What about Rick Ruben?’
MB: How did you find working with Puff Daddy?
JP: Diddy’s a genius, right?
CA: Yeah, he was really generous with his time, totally open to the whole experience. He’s a pro.
JP: He got it and he was game, right away. We went to Miami to meet him. We went to his house, explained what we were up to, and he was into it.
CA: We shot him later that night for about an hour. Did the scene three times. He was good all the way through.
LB: Well, that’s why it’s so great. It doesn’t feel forced.
JP: Well, a lot of it was forced. There were a lot of things that were difficult to capture. But I think the thing is, Casey actually acted a lot on this, but it was mostly off-camera. For instance, a scene with Antony toward the end where we get in argument and I slap him. And Casey was like, ‘we need a confrontation with Ant’, we’ve only got a day left in New York, and I remember being in the room, and I just couldn’t do it, and I was tired. And Casey is like ‘this is the night, we have to leave tomorrow, it has to happen.’ And I just couldn’t do it, I couldn’t feel it at all. And so Casey just went into the room and started raising his voice and being like, ‘Ant what are you doing, why aren’t you putting the tapes together, where are the lights?’ And so I walked into the room and was like, ‘where are the fucking lights? Why are you always fucking everything up?!’ And that’s what happened a lot. A lot of the energy in the room Casey would have to create and start and let it warm, and then I would come in.
LB: But that’s a good director.
JP: Yes, but most directors aren’t really capable of doing that. I think Casey was able to be convincing in those moments whether people were angry or yelling at him, but it was always in an effort to try and get me to that place. Because we really were all friends hanging out. And sometimes you’d be in a normal conversation and have to be like, ‘oh yeah, we have to do this scene’. And it was hard to get back into that trajectory, especially for a reshoot. There were so many things he was trying to do simultaneously and then it was, in addition to all the technical stuff, you have to get everyone warmed up and in the right mood and shit.
MB: Do you like being an enabler, Casey?
JP: It couldn’t have been enjoyable.
CA: No, it was not enjoyable. Usually not enjoyable. But once the film started going, it had its own momentum and created its own reality, and it took the burden off of me. And a lot of the time the burden was on Joaquin, because ostensibly it was about somebody who was acting on his own free will. Much of the burden fell on Joaq.
JP: It was very difficult and most of the hard work Casey had to own.

*Muller is measuring photo light. Demme is flipping somersaults, standing on her hands, flipping cartwheels, basically being invisible, taking photos of Phoenix’s shoes and cigarettes and ashtray and fingernails, and the like.

JP: I mean are you serious!? I’m gonna kill you Demme. And also you can’t be the person who takes the thing and then is like, ‘I don’t take the thing.’ [belly laughs all around] You’re literally the worst!
AD: Oh, I’m the worst?
JP: You’re so close to the worst that we should just call it the worst.
CA: Let’s just talk about Amanda Demme. She had to book the shows, convince very skeptical club owners and DJ’s and hosts etc that Joaquin was for real and there wasn’t gonna be any hijinks.
JP: Dem’s the best. Well, she’s so close to the best that we should just… [chuckles all around]
LB: Did you guys get paid for the shows?
JP: Yeah, but we gave it to charity.
CA: Yeah, we got paid. A big white Cadillac, drove it all over town.
MB: Joaquin, how’d you put on all the weight?
JP: That’s the easiest thing. Fried peanut butter and jelly and ice cream sandwiches.
LB: Fuck! I wanna try it! We should have a party with those on the menu.
JP: I’ll make you one dude, it’s ridiculous.
LB: We’re gonna have a party with those! That’s so Texas of you. It sounds like the god damned state fair.
JP: It’s, it’s the best.
MB: Yeah, you really porked up, dude.
CA: It was amazing, so much weight.
JP: It wasn’t so much.
LB: Yes it was!
CA: It wasn’t just that, though, it was the way Joaquin carried himself, his general appearance, he transformed.
JP: I looked beautiful!
CA: But like you put on a suit, you got in an Armani suit, which one wouldn’t do–other people would just let themselves go, but he let himself go in a way that just seemed like he was out of control, trying to hold it together, he’d wear a suit, try and go out in public.
JP: Casey put on weight too! But he wasn’t filmed.
LB: Like the husband of a pregnant lady! I don’t need that shit. I gain weight just by looking at ice cream.
JP: I’d actually wanted to be really fit for it. I wanted to be like a dude that focuses all his time, has become obsessed about working out. But Casey wanted me to be falling apart.
LB: Well, if you’re supposed to be a mess and so desperate and on all these drugs or whatever, you don’t have time to be going to the gym at six in the morning to get a six pack.
JP: Well we did do a scene that’s cut out. You know those muscle stimulators? Casey and Larry had me hooked up, full body, but we lost that footage. I mean, we lost a few cameras in the course of this. Or Casey lost them, or whatever.
MB: Okay then, how about something a little more abstract… You guys obviously spent heaps of time together in the process. But what do you two think, outside of your own process, the film says about friendship?
JP: That’s you dude, because you actually said the other day, ‘it’s really a film about friendship’.
CA: The relationship between Joaquin and Larry feels close to the heart of the movie but you never feel it till the end. Larry could do or say anything with complete sincerity and naturalism.
JP: He had said that the thing that’s important about friendship is that when a dude really needs you, and you’re going down, you’re hurting, is when it really matters. He said, ‘it doesn’t matter if I’m there when you’re successful. What’s important is that people see that a guy will be there for the other guy… [to Demme, who has her camera now inches from Phoenix’s face] What are you doing?! I mean, Jesus Christ!
LB: But would you say that a friendship is about unconditional trust?
CA: You are determined to pigeon hole the conversation aren’t you?
LB: Is there another hole I can put it in? I wanna put it in some kind of hole!
CA: I would say that Joaquin really had to trust everybody. And the thing about trust is that there’s never enough evidence to trust anyone. You have to make the choice to trust people. And Joaquin just made the choice despite most evidence telling him not to.
JP: That’s not true at all. I was like Malcolm X at the window with a gun all the time, thinking ‘where is Casey with the fucking camera?’ Every time there was rustle in the bushes, I fucking ran out, threw on the lights. I was in a perpetual state of paranoia thinking that they were filming me constantly. I was in San Francisco, I stayed up for a couple hours alone, just doing bits around the room, because I was convinced they had cameras, and I was up until one in the morning, doing monologues and all this stuff, and the cameras were there but they weren’t on.
CA: Some of the people on the film were chosen not for the roles they had on the crew, but because they were going to play characters in the movie as well–they would be a part of the cast. This is a movie about a man having a movie made about him. He alienates everyone until the only people around make up a documentary film crew. Then he alienates the film crew. So some of the crew were chosen as much for their real personality and how well suited they would be as a “cast member”as they were for what they could do on the crew. Antony was wonderfully understanding of this, and turned out to be technically very instrumental. He trusted that we had good intentions.
LB: I told Sue that if by any chance she gets the credit for being the fool in the film, people are gonna be running out of her office! They’ll be like, ‘That bitch is acting!’
JP: And a credit to Sue for being comfortable to do it.
MB: When you go to William Morris Endeavor and they’re like, ‘no scripts what
soever?’ and you’re like, ‘well, within reason… I mean, no.”
JP: That’s because Casey said it would be more believable if the character seemed like it was just a front, like he would try to do it, but in case something really good came along…
CA: I never said that at all. But the scariest thing of all the things we did, the scariest thing we did was going into William Morris Endeavor, and walking in with cameras and trying to sit down and interview Patrick Whitesell.
JP: They [WME] proved very helpful and we needed them.
LB: Has Patrick seen the film?
JP: No he hasn’t. We haven’t shown it to anyone.
CA: Yeah, we’ve only shown it to Flaunt.
LB: Oh fuck you. Sue’s seen it.
CA: Sue Gossage, Jr?
MB: Didn’t the Los Angeles Times see it, or…?
CA: No. We did a screening for distributors. The LA Times wrote something negative based on things they’d heard from people coming out. They knew we were trying to keep a lid on the content and they included some spoilers.
MB: Yeah, it was written like a screening for the media and this was his [John Horn’s] actual account. Like he was entitled to review or whatever. And it was only the scandalous stuff, just a list of deviant things or whatever.
JP: Yeah, but we knew that those things would be talked about.
MB: That’s a good thing, right?
JP: In some ways, it might be cheap and easy of us, but we did know those scenes would be talked about.
MB: And so you planned the grand dumping?
CA: Well, it was never really thought out. We knew something bad had to happen to Joaquin, something traumatic, and it had to come from a friend. And we talked about many things. But he was set on having someone shit on his face. Also, at the time of filming, we knew that the feces rig–the tube, the mechanism that was designed to come out of Antony’s anus and make it look like he was defecating–we knew that would be more profitable in the film. We patented it and it has done very well.
MB: Well, it’s a treat for a big John Waters fan like Luis.
LB: I was like, ugh, I can’t fucking believe that dude! I don’t care how you wanna play in it… I mean, as a gay man, I don’t mind feces here and there, but not on my face! Just a wash cloth here, you know, to take it out.
JP: Wow, that’s better than the real thing.
MB: You’re quite the Bruce la Bruce fan too, aren’t you, Luis?
LB: Oh I love Bruce la Bruce. I think it’s interesting that people take things to certain levels, and all of us, I think, have these things in our heads, and when you see them like that–even though they’re shocking, they make you feel a little more comfortable.

Joaquin Phoenix returned to The Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday night for the first time since his Feb. 2009 appearance. Last night, Letterman described Phoenix as “the dope in the beard” and “a side of beef in a suit.”

This time around, Phoenix was clean-shaven and trim in a sleek gray suit. “Whattaya got to say for yourself?” said Letterman in a mock-accusatory tone. Then he got down to it:

“Now, did I know anything about this?” he asked, referring to his part in the filming of the Casey Affleck-directed hoax-documentary I’m Still Here. Phoenix said, “No.” Letterman: “Yeah. Was there a script that you and I were working with?” “No,” Phoenix said. Dave smiled. “Thank you very much. I was not part of it, was I?”

But then Phoenix took the tale in a different direction. “Yeah, but, I mean, I think that you’ve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person.” So the new positions of these two are: Dave wants you to think he knew “somethin’ ain’t right” but he didn’t know it was a put-on for a movie project, and Joaquin wants you to know he assumed Dave did know it was a put-on, because Dave is such a pro, he can sniff out a phony a mile away.

“But I apologize,” said Phoenix. “I hope I didn’t offend you in any way.” “Oh, no, no, no, I was not offended,” said Letterman. ” I’m telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger.” Ah, so Dave did know he was being tossed softballs, as one of his writers, Bill Scheft, has said. It’s just that they didn’t have a script.

Gee, I think we witnessed two guys hustling each other, and their audiences.

Phoenix drifted into snooze-ville when he said he and Affleck had wanted to make a movie that “explored celebrity and the media and people who consume celebrity.” He said he’d gotten the idea from “watching a lot of reality shows. I was amazed people believed them… The acting was terrible.” Joaquin, let me introduce you to Media Studies 101: Reality TV is not real.

Letterman cut through all this by saying all he cared about was that “I had been made a fool of. Do I come off like a jerk?” He said Phoenix owed him “a million dollars [from] all the promotion — we want something for that.”

“Can we talk about this privately?” said Phoenix, trying to deflect the joke.

“Yeah,” Letterman shot back. “We’ll go to one of your screenings.”

Clint Eastwood's Hoover is quickly heating up at Warner Bros., where Vulture hears that Joaquin Phoenix is said to be the director's top choice to play J. Edgar Hoover's reputed paramour and protégé, Clyde Tolson. (Exactly the kind of praiseworthy part we said Phoenix needed to up his standing in Hollywood's star market.) For those unfamiliar with Tolson and Hoover, they really were the original “Ambiguously Gay Duo”: As the associate director of the FBI from 1947 to 1972, Tolson was in daily close contact with Hoover at the office, but even more interesting, the pair also dined, socialized in night clubs, and even vacationed together.

Sources familiar with the situation say that that while it’s true that the Eastwood project has not yet even finalized a deal with Leonardo DiCaprio to star as Hoover, Phoenix is nonetheless expected to receive the offer to play Tolson as soon as DiCaprio’s deal closes.

With a script by Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, Hoover explores the two men’s complicated relationship; neither man ever admitted to being gay, and Hoover was known for hunting down and intimidating those who dared questioned his sexual preference while he was alive. But Hoover’s actions in death seem to suggest they were more than simply pals in life: When Hoover died, Tolson was not only the beneficiary of Hoover’s life-insurance policy, he also inherited Hoover's estate and moved into his house. At Hoover’s funeral, he accepted the U.S. flag draped over Hoover's coffin, and today, Tolson's grave is a few yards from Hoover's in the Congressional Cemetery.

Insiders tell us that Eastwood’s casting agent, Fiona Ware (who cast Hereafter), is already scheduled to fly into Burbank from London in early October to begin the casting process. One has to wonder if her imminent arrival might be the reason for Casey Affleck’s sudden and out-of-the-blue decision to “come clean” about the fictional nature of the Phoenix documentary I’m Still Here — fear that portraying him as a drug-addled crazy with a tenuous grip on reality might jeopardize Phoenix’s chances at such a fantastic and potentially Oscar-worthy role.

Mia Wasikowska, star of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, has attached herself to the indie dramedy Big Shoe alongside un-”retired” actor Joaquin Phoenix, reports Vulture
The project, still in need of financing, is about a footwear designer (Phoenix) with a shoe fetish. Steven Shainberg, who directed the S&M fetish film Secretary, is set to helm the movie, once it lands a few investors. The pairing of “J.P.” and Wasikowska should help.
On top of the huge 3D hit, Wasikowska delivered a terrific performance in the festival favorite The Kids Are All Right and already wrapped work as the title character in Jane Eyre.
Phoenix has circled several projects prior to the release of his faux documentary I’m Still Herebut so far he’s firmly attached to this and on the short list to star opposite Jennifer Garner in Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a modern-day fable about a child music prodigy and his parents.
Meanwhile, Phoenix’s brother-in-law and doc director Casey Affleck is re-teaming with filmmaker Andrew Dominik (The Asssassination of Jesse James) for an undisclosed crime drama, according to the New York Times. Well, unless that’s a hoax too.

Now that Casey Affleck has admitted that I´m Still Here was in fack a hoax, it´s time for Joaquin Phoenix to dust himself off from his two-year bearded bender and become an actual actor again. Knowing that his I´m Still Here performance was fake actually proves again what a talent he is, and studios and directors are reportedly all hunting him down for roles, apparently confident that he's not in fact a drug-addled asshole, but just played one in a mockumentary.

We learned a few weeks ago that Phoenix was attached to the foot fetish comedy Big Shoe, which would be directed by Secetary's Steven Shainberg and showed major indie potential. Now Vulture is reporting, as part of a long exploration of Phoenix's career prospects, that Mia Wasikowska is set to star opposite him, presumably as a young female object of his character's foot fetish affections.

My first instinct when even imagining the young, luminous, prodigiously talented Wasikowska in proximity to Phoenix is to shield her with a coat and usher her to safety. But then, that's just my first-hand experience with the bearded, shambling, apparently fake Phoenix talking. Wasikowska has a million career options in front of her right now following the success of Alice in Wonderland and especially The Kids Are All Right, and working opposite Phoenix in a dark comedy is an intriguing and probably good choice, and definitely more buzzworthy than working with Phoenix 5 years ago would have been. The casting could change at a moment's notice, though, but I like seeing Wasikowska pursuing more and more grown-up roles, apparently determined not to let her wandering performance in the awful Alice in Wonderland define her. Suits against Casey Affleck settled

The lawsuits alleging sexual harassment have been dismissed.

Casey Affleck has been in the news a lot lately for his controversial directorial debut, I’m Still Here, but many people might recall how it was just a few months ago that the actor/director found himself getting sued by two women for sexual harassment. Those lawsuits have finally been resolved.
According to The Los Angeles Times, a spokesman for Affleck stated on Monday that the two lawsuits have been “resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties” and are now being dismissed. No further details were given.
It was in July that two women working on the crew for I’m Still Here filed separate suits against Affleck, claiming he made numerous unwanted sexual advances throughout production. One of the women, Amanda White, also said the director brought two transvestite prostitutes on the set for his personal use in addition to harassing her.
The other woman, Magdalena Gorka, said in a separate lawsuit that the director even went so far as to climbing in bed with her while she was asleep. Gorka claims she awoke to find Affleck caressing her back, his breath smelling of alcohol.

Casey Affleck wants to come clean.
His new movie "I'm Still here" was performance. Almost every bit of it. Including Joaquin Phoenix's disturbing appearance on David Letterman's late-night-show in 2009, Mr. Affleck said in a candid interview at a cafe here on Thursday morning.
“It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career,” Mr. Affleck said. He was speaking of Mr. Phoenix’s two-year portrayal of himself — on screen and off — as a bearded, drug-addled aspiring rap star, who, as Mr. Affleck tells it, put his professional life on the line to star in a bit of “gonzo filmmaking” modeled on the reality-bending journalism of Hunter S. Thompson.
"I'm Still Here" was released last week by Magnolia Pictures to scathing reviews by a number of critics, including Roger Ebert who wrote that the film was “a sad and painful documentary that serves little useful purpose other than to pound another nail into the coffin.”
“The reviews were so angry,” said Mr. Affleck, who attributed much of the hostility to his own long silence about a film that left more than a few viewers wondering what was real — The drugs? The hookers? The childhood home-movie sequences in the beginning? — and what was not.
Virtually none of it was real. Not even the opening shots, supposedly of Mr. Phoenix and his siblings swimming in a water hole in Panama. That, Mr. Affleck said, was actually shot in Hawaii with actors, then run back and forth on top of an old videocassette recording of "Paris, Texas" to degrade the images.
“I never intended to trick anybody,” said Mr. Affleck, an intense 35-year-old who spoke over a meat-free, cheese-free vegetable sandwich on Thursday. “The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind.”
Still, he acknowledged that Mr. Letterman was not in on the joke when Mr. Phoenix, on Feb. 11, 2009, seemed to implode his own career by showing up in character as a mumbling, aimless star gone wrong.
That was just three years after he had received an Oscar nomination for his spot-on performance as Johnny Cash in "Walk The Line" and memories of the film were fresh enough to induce shock in the millions who watched him on the show and in later Internet replays.
Mr. Letterman summed up the interview: “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”
Asked whether Mr. Phoenix would be in character for his return to Mr. Letterman’s program on Wednesday, Mr. Affleck said, “No, no, no.” And Mr. Letterman has not talked with Mr. Phoenix about the coming appearance, he added. Most mockumentaries, in the way of "This Is Spinal Tap," wear their foolishness on their sleeves, leaving no doubt about their character as fiction. But Mr. Affleck, who is married to Mr. Phoenix’s sister and has been his friend for almost 20 years, said he wanted audiences to experience the film’s narrative, about the disintegration of celebrity, without the clutter of preconceived notions.
So he said little in interviews. “We wanted to create a space,” he said. “You believe what’s happening is real.”
As the film progresses, Mr. Affleck explained, subtle cues were supposed to provide hints of his real intention. Camera techniques, extremely raw at the beginning, become more sophisticated as the film goes on, for instance.
“There were multiple takes, these are performances,” Mr. Affleck said of unsettling sequences in which Mr. Phoenix appears to snort drugs, consort with hookers, and hunt to the ground an assistant who has betrayed him to the press — again, mostly actors.
But the movie never quite showed its hand. “There was no wink,” Mr. Affleck said.
One of the trickier elements was to win the cooperation of Mr. Phoenix’s agent, Patrick Whitesell, of William Morris Endeavor Entertainment. On telling Mr. Whitesell that he planned to make everybody believe that a prized client “has lost his mind and make him as unattractive as possible, you would think he would have me killed immediately,” Mr. Affleck said.
But Mr. Whitesell, instead, took a part in the film.
Mr. Phoenix’s unconventional background may have helped convince some that the film was true. Now 35, he was one of five children in a free-spirited family that bounced from life in a religious cult through a time when the siblings worked as street performers. Mr. Phoenix’s brother River, also an actor, died of a drug overdose in 1993. His sister Summer eventually married Mr. Affleck.
In the film Mr. Phoenix is often called “J. P.,” both an attempt at a rap stage name and the inevitable shorthand of a star’s inner world. At one point in the film Mr. Phoenix howls at his crew in exasperation: “J. P. is all of us.”
As Mr. Affleck now makes clear, he is actually none of us — which is something of a relief.
But Mr. Phoenix may now have his work cut out for him when it comes to repairing an image that was marred by what Mr. Affleck portrays as his best performance. The Los Angeles Times reported this week that Mr. Phoenix, who makes much of abandoning his screen career in the film, is fielding offers for new roles.
Mr. Affleck, for his part, will return to acting for a while, probably in a film for Andrew Dominik, who directed "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," for which Mr. Affleck received an Oscar nomination.
At least one element in the film was genuine, Mr. Affleck said. That was a snippet of a home movie that showed Mr. Phoenix and his very young siblings performing, Jackson Five style, on the streets of Los Angeles.
The rest, Mr. Affleck said, clearly requires a bit more understanding than he has allowed the viewers to date. “It is a hard movie to watch,” he said.

TORONTO -- Casey Affleck's controversial movie about Joaquin Phoenix's attempt to launch a hip-hop career will screen at next month's Toronto International Film Festival.

I'm Still Here marks the directorial debut of Affleck, whose acting credits include 2007's Gone Baby Gone, which was helmed by his brother Ben.

Phoenix caused a sensation last year when he declared his intention to quit acting in favour of music.

A series of bizarre appearances followed, including a memorable guest spot on Late Show with David Letterman, during which Phoenix -- sporting a shaggy beard and sunglasses -- was mostly incomprehensible.

The incident prompted many to wonder if Phoenix's music career was an elaborate put-on in service of Affleck's film project.

Buzz about the film hasn't exactly been entirely positive. Details of an advance screening for film buyers were leaked to the L.A. Times, with reports circulating that the film featured more nudity than a pornographic movie and a scene in which another individual defecates on Phoenix while he sleeps.

The festival also announced that it will feature the latest from Danny Boyle. Based on a true story, 127 Hours stars James Franco as a mountain climber trapped in a Utah canyon.

Boyle was the toast of Toronto two years ago, winning the audience choice award for Slumdog Millionaire, which went on to nab the Academy Award for best picture.

Other marquee directors have also been confirmed for the fest.

Clint Eastwood will bring Hereafter, which casts Matt Damon as a "blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife," while John Carpenter will premiere The Ward, a thriller that takes place in a 1960s mental institution. It's his first new film since 2001's Ghost of Mars.

Meanwhile, Dustin Lance Black -- the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Milk -- will bring What's Wrong With Virginia, a drama he wrote and directed that stars Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Emma Roberts.

Elsewhere, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon and Canadian Ellen Page star in the James Gunn-directed superhero flick Super; 13-year-old Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass) takes centre stage in Let Me In, an adaptation of the well-loved Swedish cult film/novel Let the Right One In; and Guy Moshe's actioner Bunraku features Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore.

Will Ferrell will headline Everything Must Go, a debut feature from writer-director Dan Rush. Adapted from a Raymond Carver short story, the dramedy casts Ferrell as a recovering alcoholic who loses his job, wife and home in short order and resorts to a garage sale to survive.

Director Massy Tadjedjin's Last Night casts Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington as a married couple whose devotion is tested during a night apart, while the Brad Anderson-helmed Vanishing on 7th Street finds Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo banding together during a blackout.

Istanbul will be the subject of the City to City series, which focuses on the films from and about a certain area. Last year's inaugural version of the program drew controversy for focusing on Tel Aviv.

This year's Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 9-19.

Casey Affleck accused of sexual harassment

Hollywood actor Casey Affleck has been accused of sexual harassment by the producer of his documentary about brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix. The younger brother of superstar Ben Affleck who is married to Joaquin's younger sister Summer, has been accused of making "uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances" by producer Amanda White. She alleges that she had to endure his advances while making the movie, which chronicles Phoenix's attempt to become a rap star, reported Daily Mail. In court documents, she claims Affleck referred to women as "cows" and discussed his sexual exploits in front of her. The producer also alleges Affleck took over her hotel room in Costa Rica one night to entertain two women. She also accuses the director of attempting to get her to spend the night with him in his hotel room in San Francisco, California. Affleck's lawyer Michael Plonsker said in a statement, "Ms. White was terminated from the production over a year ago. She and her lawyers believe that this maliciously and erroneously filed complaint will cause the producers to succumb to her outrageous and baseless demands. She is mistaken. The complaint will be vigorously defended and cross-claims will be filed against her."

Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix's representative has shot down reports which quoted Academy Award winning Indian sound technician Resul Pokutty to claim that the actor is preparing to return to the big screen as author Edgar Allen Poe.
The 'Slumdog Millionaire' sound designer had earlier been quoted by Mumbai Mirror in a report which said that Phoenix was turning his back on his rap career to head back to acting, reported Contactmusic.

He told the tabloid that the star had signed up to the play iconic American writer and poet in an upcoming movie.

But Pookutty's claims have been dismissed by Phoenix's rep, who tells GossipCop.com the star will not be appearing in the picture.

The 'Walk The Line' actor quit Hollywood last year announcing plans to focus on becoming a hip-hop star.

Joaquin back on screen as Egar Allen Poe?

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican is said tackling the role of the famous author in 'The Beautiful Cigar Girl', a movie adaptation of the book with the same title.

After announcing his retirement from acting in late 2008, Joaquin Phoenix may be seen on big screen again. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Oscar-winning sound recordist Resul Pookutty who previously worked on "Slumdog Millionaire" has revealed that the actor is set to star in "The Beautiful Cigar Girl", portraying Edgar Allan Poe.

"It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854. It's an adaptation of 'The Beautiful Cigar Girl' by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allan Poe which happened just months before his death," Resul says on his involvement in the project, before claiming "Joaquin plays Edgar Allan Poe."

There is no word on who will direct or write the script for the movie. The book itself tells the story of Edgar's investigation in solving the mystery behind the brutal death of a beautiful society girl.

If the news is proven to be true, "The Beautiful Cigar Girl" could mark Joaquin Phoenix's debut on big screen after deciding to quit acting to focus on his music career in October 2008. He previously has starred in a number of movies including "Gladiator", "Hotel Rwanda" and "Two Lovers".

On his music career, Joaquin recorded the soundtrack album of "Walk the Line" and won an award at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards for his work on the soundtrack. In May 2008, he was reported to have recorded songs he had written himself with Mike Fox taking the lead vocal. However, the project still has no release date.

French Festival crowns James Gray

New York-born director, screenwriter and producer James Gray will receive a tribute at Gaul's second Beaune Intl. Thriller Film Festival.
The homage builds on Gray's close relationship with France, where his Gotham-set crime mellers "Little Odessa," "The Yards" and "We Own the Night" have given him a cult following.

Produced by 2029 Prods. and co-financed and co-sold by France's Wild Bunch, Gray's last film, "Two Lovers," with his regular lead Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, competed at Cannes in 2008.

Gray will deliver a master class April 10. His tribute is framed in a larger focus on New York City noir.

Festival's film jury prexy will be French helmer Olivier Marchal, known for his own triptych of dark crime dramas "MR 73," "Gangsters" and "36 Quai des Orfevres."

Taking place in the capital of the Bourgogne wine region, fest runs April 8-11.
